A Thankful Thanksgiving :)

Have you ever heard the Thanksgiving story? While homeschooling my seven year old daughter we came across why we celebrate Thanksgiving:

American Holidays;

The pilgrims had their first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. They had much to be thankful for. Their first winter in America had been very hard. But now they had homes to stay in and food to stored up for their second winter. They had made friends with the Indians.
Today Americans have much more to be thankful for. We live in a free country. We have homes, plenty of food, warm clothing, and good friends.
As most of us think about that first Thanksgiving, we think that every year after that there was a day of thanksgiving at harvest time. This is not true.
In the years following 1621, there were special days of thanksgiving for many different things. Whenever anything happended that people wanted to praise the Lord for, they would have a special day of thanksgiving and prayer. in 1698, Maryland had a day of thanksgiving because a terrible sickeness had come upon many people had ended.
In 1789, President George Washington had a day of thanksgiving for a new and free country.

In 1860, Mrs. Sarah Hale asked President Lincoln to proclaim a day of thanksgiving for our whole country. After the War between the States, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a Thanksgiving Day for our country. That has been our Thanksgiving ever since.

After reading this I realized we need to spend more days being thankful. We don't need to wait for a special day to be thankful :)
